The Whole Summer in Big Bear

The Whole Summer in Big Bear

Paddleboarding on Big Bear Lake on a summer day near Colorado Lodge boutique lodge in Big Bear Lake California

Long days. Cool pines. A place to land at the end of them.

Big Bear gets loud in summer, and that’s part of the charm. The lake fills up with pontoons. The trails fill up with mountain bikers. The Village is busy in the way mountain towns are supposed to be busy. None of that goes away when you book Colorado Lodge. What changes is what you come home to.

Six modern cabins. Two acres of pine forest. No clutter, no kitsch, no antlers on the wall. We’re less than a mile from Snow Summit and Big Bear Village, two hours from Los Angeles, and built for the part of summer that doesn’t show up in anyone’s photos: the long evening on the deck, the cold drink in a quiet cabin, the deep sleep that the city never quite lets you have.

Quick Take

  • Every cabin has AC, which is genuinely rare in Big Bear (most rentals skip it).
  • All six cabins are pet-friendly, two pets per cabin, dogs and cats both welcome. C6 has a private fenced yard.
  • Walking distance to Snow Summit and Big Bear Village. Two hours from Los Angeles.
  • On property: hot tubs, a yoga and meditation deck, a community fire pit. No TV demanding your attention in every room.
  • 24-hour real human guest service. Not chatbots.

Why summer is the right time to come

Most Big Bear cabins skip air conditioning. Ours doesn’t. Every cabin at Colorado Lodge has AC, which matters more than it sounds when you’re driving up from LA in August.

The property sits in pine forest, not on pavement. The black cabin exteriors disappear into the trees, oversized windows pull the forest inside, and the interiors are designed to slow you down rather than entertain you. Bring a book. We have hot tubs, a yoga deck, and a community fire pit. We do not have a TV demanding your attention in every room.

You can also bring the dog. All six cabins are pet-friendly, two pets per cabin, dogs and cats both welcome, which is genuinely rare in Big Bear, where most rentals cap at one or none. C6 has a private fenced yard if your dog needs to be off-leash without a hike.

What to do out there

Big Bear in summer is a lake day, a trail day, and a “let’s see where this fire road goes” day. Here’s the short version. We’re happy to plan the long version with you when you check in.

On the lake

Pontoon rentals, kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, fishing boats, and a marina full of people who’d rather be on the water than off it. Big Bear Lake is small enough to know in a weekend and big enough to keep finding new coves. The marinas are five to ten minutes from the lodge.

On the trails

The hiking around Colorado Lodge ranges from easy meadow loops to steep climbs above the treeline. Pine Knot, Castle Rock, Cougar Crest, and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) all start nearby. Start early. The afternoon thunderstorms in the San Bernardinos are real, and locals plan around them.

On a bike

Big Bear is one of Southern California’s mountain biking capitals. The Snow Summit lift runs all summer for downhill riders, and the cross-country trails draw cyclists up here all season. Drop your bike on the deck after a ride. The community hot tub will be ready.

Off the pavement

Off-roading is its own thing in Big Bear. The Gold Fever Trail and Holcomb Valley are easy day trips. Rent a Jeep or bring your own. Either way, a long shower in your cabin afterward is one of the more underrated luxuries of the weekend.

Up at altitude

Bear Mountain Golf Course sits at about 7,000 feet, which means your ball flies further and your lungs work harder. Tee times go fast in summer.

Around town

Big Bear Village fills up with summer events. Live music, art walks, LakeFest in late August, Music in the Mountains, SkyFest for stargazers, and Tough Mudder for the type-two-fun crowd. The calendar shifts year to year. Ask us at check-in for what’s on this week, and we’ll point you at the good stuff.

Slower stuff, on property

A lot of guests don’t end up using their cabins as a base. They end up using them as the destination. Here’s what that looks like.

  • C4 is our flagship and the only cabin on the property with a real wood-burning fireplace, plus a clawfoot tub in the spa-bath master overlooking the trees. Some guests don’t leave it.
  • C6 has a private fenced yard, a private hot tub, and a private fire pit. It’s built for dog people who want their own corner of the woods.
  • C3 and C5 have outdoor pizza ovens on the back porch. Pick up fresh dough in town, throw on whatever you’ve got, eat under the pines.
  • The community hot tub is open to every guest, professionally maintained daily, and the kind of place where strangers become acquaintances and acquaintances stop checking their phones.
  • The yoga and meditation deck has mats provided. No instructor, no schedule, no app. Just a flat platform among tall trees and whatever you want to do with twenty quiet minutes.

Pick your cabin

A quick guide to which cabin fits which summer:

  • C2 / Sleep Inn: small group or family, full kitchen, sleeps four to six.
  • C3 / Stay Awhile: couples or pairs, kitchenette, outdoor pizza oven.
  • C4 / Colorado Lodge: the romantic pick, wood-burning fireplace, private hot tub.
  • C5 / Small + Mighty: small footprint, big charm, pizza oven on the porch.
  • C6 / The Place Beyond The Pines: for dogs and their people, private yard, private hot tub.
  • C7 / Nocturnal Beauty: sleeps four with a sleeper sofa, deep soaking tub.

Book a few cabins together for a full property buyout. We do those for milestone trips, family reunions, and small group weekends.

A few practical notes for summer guests

A few things worth knowing before you pack the car.

  • Big Bear sits at about 6,750 feet. Drink more water than you think you need, especially the first day, and go easy on the alcohol your first night.
  • Mornings up here are cool even in July. Pack a layer for the deck and the fire pit. Afternoons are warm enough for the lake.
  • Cell service is fine on the property. The Wi-Fi works. We’re not asking you to fully unplug. We’re just making it easier if you decide to.
  • Real humans answer the phone at Colorado Lodge, around the clock, not chatbots. If something comes up at 11 PM, we’re a text away.

Come See for Yourself

Big Bear summer is short and unreasonably good. Two hours from Los Angeles. Six modern cabins, two acres of pine forest, and a quieter way to spend the season than the algorithm has been suggesting.
